Recipe: Beef Teriyaki With Garlic Rice

Ok, this beef teriyaki was amazing. I made it with a friend and it went beyond our expectations. I can’t wait to have it again!

This recipe requires you to make your own teriyaki sauce – no cheating here!

It does take some patience and some tweaking to get the flavours right. Also, the recipes we used to create ours used cups as a measurement which I know is slightly annoying. I would advise that you use a regular sized mug for this measurement. Unless, of course, you actually know how much a cup is supposed to be.

So, if you’re up for the challenge, find the method below.

Serves 2


For the rice:

1 cup of rice

1 tbsp of minced garlic


For the teriyaki:

2 beef steaks

1 bag of mixed stir-fry veg

1 onion


For the sauce:

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup water

2 tbsp sweet rice wine

2 tbsp brown sugar

1/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp minced garlic

1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch



1. To make the rice, first sautée for 3 minutes in a frying pan along with the minced garlic.

2. Add 2 cups of water and simmer in the frying pan for half an hour with a lid on. I checked my rice 15 minutes in, giving it a stir and adding a little extra water if necessary.

3. Once the rice is cooking, it’s time to make the teriyaki sauce. Leaving the cornstarch for later, combine all other sauce ingredients in a saucepan and heat until the sugar is dissolved, occasionally stirring.

4. Mix the cornstarch with 2 tbsp of water before adding it the saucepan and stir in. Taste the sauce and add more sugar if necessary.

5. Let the sauce simmer until thickened. We left ours on, thickening until the rice was ready. If you’re sauce is still watery, add a little extra cornstarch.

6. Next, cut up your beef steaks into long slices. We kept ours quite thick so that the meat would stay tender. If you like yours well done, then thinner strips will do.

7. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and cook the beef until done.

8. Stir-fry the mixed vegetables and onions in a wok or large pan for 5 minutes and then add to the beef.

9. With a bit of careful juggling, all of your ingredients should be ready around the same time. Serve the beef and vegetables on top of a bed of garlic rice and add teriyaki sauce to finish.
