For me, starting a new blog was daunting. I didn’t know the first thing about it and I’m still learning new things all the time. I’ve always wished that I had a blogging ‘big sister’ that could help me out with all my questions, which is how the idea for this feature came about.
Each month I’ll be chatting to an upcoming blogger about their personal journey and it’ll be an opportunity to share their tips and advice. So whether you’re new to this or simply looking to find other great bloggers out there, I hope you find these posts helpful as well as inspiring.
This month: Boo’s Beauty
Becky is another intern I met at Sheerluxe at the start of the year. As is often the case when I meet a fellow writer, we soon got chatting about our blogs. Becky was in the process of starting Boo’s Beauty and was brimming with ideas. Since she set up a few months ago, she’s been working very hard, posting regularly and also venturing into vlogging through her YouTube channel – something I’ve been too scared to try out just yet! She’s a girl on a mission, and her purse-friendly beauty finds are well worth looking out for.
What I love about her blog is how honest her reviews are, she doesn’t try to please the brand by being overly nice about the products – she says it how it is. It’s a refreshing change knowing I’ll be finding out the pros as well as the cons before deciding whether to buy. Becky’s mission is to find affordable beauty products that don’t compromise on the quality, essentially doing the hard work for us – thanks Becky!
How did Boo’s Beauty come about? And tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the name.
Boo’s Beauty was created as a way to give tips on hair and beauty that friends and family kept asking me. I read many beauty blogs and watch a lot of YouTube channels and decided to create my own to express my love for makeup and beauty as well as to help my friends!
The name comes from my nickname amongst my friends, “Becky boo,” so I decided to name it that so it was a bit different but still linked to me in some way. I think it’s catchy which is another reason I used it as it’s easier to remember.
What can new readers expect to find on your blog?
A mixture of makeup tips, makeup reviews, subscription box reviews, hair tips, hair care and beauty tips. My most popular posts are on cheap makeup such as eBay finds, so will be doing more posts like that as everyone loves to find a good bargain!
What inspires you to write?
My love for makeup. I love being able to showcase my love for a new beauty product or express my unimpressed review. Getting really lovely comments from people always makes me more determined to produce even better posts.
Who has impacted you most?
My mum has impacted me the most. She has always pushed for me to be who I want to be, explore everything that is out there to find where my passion lies.
Who is your celebrity role model and why?
I would have to say Emilia Clarke as she’s so down to earth and very comfortable with who she is. She is very talented and such a lovely woman.
What brand would you love to work with and why?
What do you find the most rewarding about blogging?
The responses you get back from strangers. It’s so heartwarming knowing that someone out there really enjoyed reading your post or watching your video.
Do you have any design and layout tips for new bloggers?
Have a good look around the internet. There are some good layouts and designs that you can get for free when you are just starting. After a while once you have a good idea of how you want it to look permanently I would recommend Etsy as I bought mine on there fairly cheaply and managed to get the person to set it all up for me.
What do you think is the best strategy to get more traffic to your blog?
The best way to get traffic to your blog is to post on all social media outlets. I have a Facebook page, Pinterest, Twitter, Bloglovin’, Instagram and YouTube. Facebook is great as there are so many blogger groups you can join to help spread the word for your blog as well as meet and interact with fellow bloggers in your field. It’s always best to help other bloggers as well, we all comment and like each other’s posts to help promote.
Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Best piece of advice I have been given is to only blog when you’re in the mood. When it becomes a chore people can tell in your writing. I only do my posts and videos when I am in the mood or inspired so that my best work is showcased and is more interesting to watch and read.
Any inspiring words for aspiring bloggers out there?
Just enjoy it! Don’t get stressed if your views, followers or likes aren’t building up quick enough, it takes a lot of time for a blog to be successful. Just take it for what it is and eventually you will see it grow and blossom!
I hope you enjoyed reading this post, please share your thoughts! I’m always on the lookout for more great bloggers and I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below…
