Just look at the place. No wonder there was a crowd of people huddled outside for a much-coveted selfie under the floral doorway of Peggy Porschen café. It looks like a place of dreams, with promises of sugary treats awaiting inside.
I went to visit with my sister on a late summer’s day in August and we waltzed right in and sat ourselves down. Not long after, I had a tap on the shoulder from the waitress who politely informed me that there was a queue. Whoops. We headed back outside and took the opportunity to take a few more selfies in front of the prettiest café we’d ever seen.
The waitress told us it would be about a half hour wait but in the end we only had to wait ten minutes! Before we knew it, we were back inside and drooling over the menu.
With a variety of cupcakes, layer cakes and selection of drinks we were totally spoilt for choice.
In the end we chose a summer berry pudding cupcake, a strawberry and champagne cupcake, a lemon, raspberry and rose layer cake and a hot chocolate and cappuccino. We really wanted to try the peach melba layer cake too but we were already ordering more than we should have, so we’ll just have to go back for that one….
The drinks were just right. In a sugary haven such as this, my worry was that the hot chocolate would be too sweet to handle but it perfectly complemented the cakes. My sister, who is a huge coffee fan, really loved the cappuccino and asked for it with a shot of caramel syrup.
The lemon, raspberry and rose layer cake looked very impressive and was decadent in flavour with a sharp citrus edge that helps cut through the sweetness.
But our favourites were the cupcakes – the buttercream was sensational! Strawberry and champagne was light and delicate and the summer berry pudding was particularly delicious. We loved all the fresh fruit on top.
Look how happy we are!
I definitely recommend you visit Peggy Porschen if you’re near Belgravia. The café is only five minutes away from London Victoria Station and it’s such a beautiful little spot.
